About National Service Scheme (NSS):

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of 11th & 12th Class of schools at +2 Board level and student youth of Technical Institution, Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various government led community service activities &programmes.The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service. Since inception of the NSS in the year 1969, the number of students strength increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million up to the end of March 2018 students in various universities, colleges and Institutions of higher learning have volunteered to take part in various community service programmes.

JSS SMI UG & PG has introduced NSS from the academic year 2017-18. The college NSS unit has strength of 100 students. The camp unit has strength of 50 participants annual camp every year.

Every year college has been conducting various Shramadanaactivities. Some of these are:

Tree plantation
Blood donation camp
Cleaning activities (campus and surrounding places)
Health awareness activities
Street rally
Prohibition of drugs and awareness activities
Traffic rules awareness activities

Apart from these, college has also been indulged in organizing various lecturing sessions. Some of them are:

One nation One India (Constitution day)
Health awareness session
Women empowerment
Society and harassment related

The college has conducted three annual village camps. The details of which are:

Place: Bogur, Dharwad Year 2017-18 Objectives of the camp: The students constructed 52 toilets for bogur villagers. Other activities include health awareness, swachta activities, education, cultural activities etc.
Place: Narendra, Dharwad Year 2018-19 Objectives of the camp: The students cleaned 2 major lakes of the village. Other activities include health awareness, swachta activities, education, cultural activities etc.
Place: Narendra, Dharwad Year 2019-20 Objectives of the camp: The students were involved in “waste managemenet” activities. They were involved in cleaning, segregating wet and dry waste of the village. Other activities include health awareness, swachta activities, education, cultural activities etc.

To develop a sense of social and civic responsibility
To inculcate the spirit of selflessness among the students
To identify the needs & problems of the community and extend a helping hand
To establish a meaningful linkage between Campus and Community, College and Village & Knowledge and Action.

Benefits of Being a NSS Volunteer:

A NSS volunteer who takes part in the community service programme would either be a college level or a senior secondary level student. Being an active member these student volunteers would have the exposure and experience to be the following:
