The JSS group owns its existence to the great soul, Sri.Hukkerikar who was mainly instrumental in laying the foundation for greater things to follow.

Sri.Hukkerikar was born on 22.10.1886 at Chinchali in Belgaum Dist. He got BA degree from Ferguson College Pune in 1910 and later MA from Bombay University in 1912. He was contemporary of Gandhiji and had close association with other freedom fighters loke R.R. Diwakar, Tilak, Alur Venkatrao etc.

On being inspired by Lokmanya Tilak, he chose education field as his area of work. He thought that education was the path of progress. So, after achieving his MA he joined Victoria High school in Dharwad and worked there till 1920. He was known for this teaching skills, discipline, and high ethical values and became a household name, fondly called ‘Master’. He took to active politics from 1924, and was arrested for participating in freedom struggle. He was a member of Congress Committee till 1942, after establishing the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee in 1928. He took active part in freedom movement and was lodged in Yerwada jail along with Sri. R. R. Diwakar.

Sri.Hukkerikar was the editor of Kannada periodical ‘Karmaveera’ (1923-25). He was also the editor of ‘United Karnataka’, ‘Dhananjaya’ and ‘Hindu’ too. He was very keen in promoting the cause of ‘Khadi’ and became the President of All India Khadi & Village Industries for 5 years. During his political career he was elected to the Bombay Vidhana Sabha in 1946. Then, in 1952 he became member of the Bombay Vidhana Parishath.

The Janata Shikshana Samiti, a pioneer in Education, had its humble beginning way back in 1944 with the JSS Arts College started by the Karnataka Education Board with the mere strength of 40 students, Originally it was an intermediate college but later on the Science wing was added in 1949. In the year 1952, it was taken over by the late R.S. Hukkerikar, a veteran freedom fighter, social worker and economist.

Sri. Hukkerikar took keen interest in starting the Sakri Law College and the KHK polytechnic College in 1956. Scores of people benefited by his contribution to society. Indeed, we are al very proud to be part of this great institution. Our glowing Tributes to Late R.S. Hukkerikarji.
